Gas Gauge
#1

2021 GTS, just purchased.  Should have a 9 gallon tank, but my gas gauge seems to funtion on a 4.5 gallon logic, meaning it indicates empty and the light turns on, even though it only takes 4.5 gallons to fill it back up.  I have done this now twice in a row.   It seems that I can just continue to drive, but now I am blind as to the real fuel level.  Any ideas?

Yes, that's very common on fuel cells. On everything from bikes and trikes and mopeds, I'm working on a fix. but its too much fun right now to do it. Normally the float in the tank is actually set below the fluid level or at an arbitrary location.  I normally set them up so 1 gallon left and the reserve light or the gauge is dead on E  then I know its 40 miles to get to gat station left. There are few diff type senders. but yeah i agree. Its actually a indicator that goes more than 180 degrees look closely 270 degree swing till empty on 2022 VV .  requires pulling rear wheel and swingarm pulling fuel cell and draining and filling with exactly 1 gallon then make physical or electronic modifications till its right on E.
Keep in the loop, surprised no one else seeing that anomaly ugh.   not a fun one to work on!  Also the fuel cell is to left of the battery viewed from back.

Ok great! i really thought i was really being OCD and not enjoying the freedom and ruminating about time and fuel. Its not me. it is an odd anomaly that drives me nutz when I stop to fill up and it takes 2.2 gallons. UGH   also the driving method and tune selected with BNR gives me between 35 and 50 MPG. so the trip indicator doesn't help at all. If more complain. I guess I will pull tank and invent a solution.  A reserve indicator That i see on the right lower on the gas gauge will illuminate when I have 1 gallon left. UGH

10/27/2022 Noticed the reserve light came on yellow and then red. I did not fill it as im soon going to pull tank and see how i can mod it so it reads more accurately.

12/10/22 update really really hard to pull tank, to get to the sender unit. The silly emergency brake cable was ran below the gas tank to get to it. Very easy to lower it. 4 bolts. cable needs to be rerouted for easy access to tank the valve that vents to the evap canister is in there also. So i was bent on getting in there. Was not even able to use the tool to remove the gas high pressure line from tank! , not enough room. very difficult to loosen the rear emergency brake cable. will be working on a fix for that.
Do other Vanderhalls go yellow on the dash LED and then red??  like i mentioned still had 2.2 gallons after red came on.

Gathering that's why my gauge drops quickly off of over full to below full in 90 miles. as the gauge is not calibrated to the actual tank sender. Very scary when your out in country and you run out of gas. Through no fault of your own!!!  Coolwhip I need input what's your thoughts. is it a wire on a float? or a hall sensor. looking into it.

From my intel, looks like a float on a wire and from the pix I have seen its a few inches from the bottom. 2022 Vandy has the most volume down where as for a simple idea pyramid shaped (kinda) more volume at bottom. Explains why gauge drops quickly at top 14inch wide at top and 17 at bottom. Explains why on fill up it never takes as how thirsty it looks.
