I'm in WA where helmets aren't required, but I wear one anyway, most of the time.  I have several since I also ride a H-D.  For the VV I wear a half helmet.  It's mainly for the short  drop-down sun screen for eye protection.  I do wear protective glasses also, but have been hit in the face by all sorts of bugs and who knows what - the windshield isn't very protective.  It's also warm on cool rides, and light weight.

Ha - indeed, those windshields aren't that great. And, it would appears by how many that break they're not that well secured
