cracked rear fender - J Patrick - 10-09-2019

Rear fender has crack near upper bolt on flat portion of fender. Any suggestions about gluing or otherwise treating the crack to stop spread and avoid having to replace the fender? TIA

Clear epoxy is probably what I would use, but be sure it's safe for ABS plastic. Probably should remove the fender before you apply anything to remove any flex or stress from the plastic before epoxying it.

I think I'll try to remove the fender and glue a couple of reinforcing strips on the underside of the fender to each side of the metal attachment arm. Will be out of sight and hopefully will stop the crack from spreading. That arm extends just barely past the center of the fender. In retrospect, I'm not surprised the fender cracked as it appears to have no support on the left edge (away from the bracket). Thanks for the suggestion about the epoxy. Will update with how it turns out.

Do you have a picture where this is?

I had some peeling of the paint on my rear fender after just a very minor gas splash near the filler hole. whole fender is OK'd to be replaced under warranty. new fender is actually at the dealer i just need to schedule the service. it is pretty cumbersome to remove the fender from what i hear....seats have to come out to get access to the roll bars for removal and such, according to the dealer shop

I should have been more explicit. My problem is not with the rear body part but just the small fender on the rear wheel.

As to the cracked rear fender:  Everyone says the body parts, including fenders, are ABS - the same as house drain plumbing pipe.  I would think the black pipe ABS glue would be the best to use if it won't show.  If you could glue a piece of ABS to the underside that would reinforce the area.

As to the paint damaged rear fender (I assume you are referring to the body panel on the rear):  It's not that hard to remove.  The screws are easy, the bolts holding the roll bars on are accessible inside the storage area behind the seats.  You should not have to remove the seats.  I have been concerned they may be hard to reinstall (won't fit) if not put back in same orientation, in case they are sprung a little.  I have to remove mine to try to find a rattle that seems to be coming from just under the body panel, on top of the storage area.

This is exactly what I did. I cut some strips of ABS and used plastic pipe glue (actually just a solvent; methyl ethyl ketone should be a major component for use on ABS) to fuse the strips to the underside of the fender. The crack was hard to see unless the fender was flexed a bit and now doesn't show at all when I flex the fender. Picture with strips clamped to fender attached.
